Stoke have announced that they have launched "a full internal investigation" into a bizarre incident which occurred at their training ground on Friday.

Their announcement followed reports that a severed pig's head had been placed in the locker of forward Kenwyne Jones as a practical joke.

The incident has been mentioned extensively on social media, Stoke defender Brek Shea having tweeted a picture of himself holding the pig's head aloft.

And it has been reported by the Daily Telegraph that Jones, furious about the prank, threw a brick through the windscreen of team-mate Glenn Whelan's car in retribution.

Stoke released a statement on Friday which read: "The club takes seriously reports of an incident at our training ground this afternoon.

"A full internal investigation will be carried out and those responsible for any unacceptable behaviour will be dealt with in accordance with the club's disciplinary procedures."

QPR's French international striker Loic Remy has been arrested on suspicion of rape, according to Sky sources.

 

The 26-year-old was held with two other men, aged 23 and 22, at an address in London on Wednesday morning.

 

The Metropolitan Police are investigating a claim from a 34-year-old woman that she was raped by three men earlier in May.

 

The investigation is being led by the Met's Sapphire unit, which specialises in rape and other crimes involving serious sexual violence.

 

The Met said in a statement: "Officers from Sapphire are investigating an allegation of rape which happened on 6 May in the west London area.

 

"The allegation was passed on to the MPS by Kent Police on May 8 after the 34-year-old female victim reported it to them on the previous day. The victim alleges she was raped by three men.

 

"On the morning of Wednesday, May 15, three men were arrested at an address in Fulham on suspicion of rape - they remain in custody at a west London police station".

 

Remy joined QPR from Marseille in January for a club record £8m fee and has scored six goals - but was unable to help Harry Redknapp's side avoid relegation.

 

The club said in a statement: "The club is aware of the allegations regarding Loic Remy, but due to police investigations is unable to comment."

 

The forward has played for France 18 times, scoring four goals.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called time on his England career with 81 caps to his name.

 

The 34-year-old clinched a sixth Premier League title with the Red Devils this season and admitted after Sunday's final home game that he was keen to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

 

Ferdinand, for whom United paid Leeds a colossal £34million in 2002, has been in the international wilderness since Roy Hodgson took charge last year - missing out on Euro 2012 and then pulling out of the squad when eventually recalled for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in March.

 

"After a great deal of thought, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from international football," said Ferdinand, who regularly undergoes injections in his spine to keep a persistent back problem at bay.

 

"At the age of 34, I feel it is right for me to stand aside and let the younger players come through, which allows me to concentrate on my club career. The team looks in great shape and there is an influx of young, talented players coming through the ranks which bodes well for the future.

 

"I regard it as a great honour and a privilege to have represented my country at every level from U17s upwards. I have always been very proud to play for England. I would like to wish Roy and the team all the best for future tournaments.

 

"A big thank you to all the fans, managers, coaching staff and players that I have worked alongside - the journey has been incredible."

 

Ferdinand became the youngest defender to ever play for England when he made his debut against Cameroon at Wembley in 1997 having just turned 19.
