He's officially announced he's done with football and will be going into a career in politics.

He was a very good striker. Not a fan of him tbh, but that's because he played for Milan

His stats:

- 124 goals in 249 games with Dynamo Kyiv (94 goals in 163 games during his first phase with Dynamo Kyiv)
- 175 goals in 322 games with AC Milan (173 goals in 296 games during his first phase with Milan)
- 22 goals in 77 games with Chelsea.
- 48 goals in 111 games with Ukraine.

Oh he scored 48 goals in the Champions League. It's already added on the result but it's still something worth mentioning...

Total: 374 goals in 764 games. 0.49 goals per game.

In his Milan day he was brilliant, shame he could never recreate it for us.

OH SHEVCHENKO!

Great player in his day, a really good career at the top level! Thought he had a couple years left in him but still. Will be remembered as a great player by many football fans.

We played two up front to accomodate him, he couldn't get to grips with the pace of the English game and couldnt get out of Drogba's shadow.

What pace?? Playing long balls isn't pace.

The speed of transition. How quickly the ball moves from defense to attack and back again.

Was a hero in the day. Have an AC shirt with his name on. A time when he was the best finisher in the world. Shame.

Thanks for the definition but I wasn't asking for it. I just don't consider "pace" playing long balls like Chelsea has done the last couple of years because they had Drogba, which is why, strikers like Torres, Crespo, etc, weren't able to establish themselves there.

You're welcome.

Luckily for us the meaning of a word doesn't change according to what you "consider." Pace is pace. Strikers like Torres, Crespo, etc weren't able to establish themselves there because they couldn't adapt, simple as.

How can you say it's pace to throw a long ball from your area to the opponent's area?? That's not what pace involves. It must be an ordered and fast enough transition. Shevchenko was playing as a winger, how could he adapt?? The others receiving long balls... blah.

Shevchenko was played as a striker not as a winger, he couldn't adapt because the pace of English football is a lot faster than Italian football, it has nothing to do with Chelsea really..

When a ball travels in the air it travels at a much faster speed than on the ground, I believe that its because of the friction of the grass, and for a player to get to the end of a long ball they need to be able to catch up with the fucking thing, which inevitably leads to more running around and a faster pace of game, up and down the pitch, like a basketball game

Crespo left in 2008, Shevchenko joined in 2006 so your pretty much comparing the Chelsea of 2006 to the Chelsea that beat Barcelona in 2012.

I think we can (majority) agree that Shevchenko had a hard time adapting, but Chelsea were also at fault for not using him properly.

We played diamond that season he came, so he could work with Drogba. Changed our (back to back title winning) team and formation to completely accomodate him, he still couldnt cope with all the kickings he was getting from Boltons etc every week. Drogba scored 33 goals that season, he lost out to the better striker, simple as.

Lots of players who come over from Italy struggle, thats why not that many come over these days.

What is all this talk of him being played as a winger, that wasn't the case.

What is all this talk of him being played as a winger, that wasn't the case.

Look where he was playing in the video you posted ;)

It's no surprise though. Mourinho did the same with Eto'o when he came to Inter. Eto'o was played as a winger (LWF or RWF) and Milito was played as the CF. I'm not saying it's all Chelsea's fault, I'm saying Chelsea played a factor in his lack of adaptation.

Same thing happened with Anelka. Anelka could adapt to another position though (sometimes as a winger, other times as AMF, etc).

1. Shevchenko was played as a striker not as a winger, he couldn't adapt because the pace of English football is a lot faster than Italian football, it has nothing to do with Chelsea really..

3. Crespo left in 2008, Shevchenko joined in 2006 so your pretty much comparing the Chelsea of 2006 to the Chelsea that beat Barcelona in 2012.

1. He played as both (as seen in the video posted, he's playing as a winger there), and even when he was playing as a striker, Chelsea was playing long balls.

2. Yes but noticed the word I wrote "ORDERED". You have to know how to run. Chelsea all this time has been playing long balls and it has worked for them because of Drogba, but it has affected strikers like Crespo, Torres, Anelka (although he could adapt to another role, sometimes as a winger), Shevchenko. Just look at Spain and Torres. They don't play long balls and Torres scores more.

3. Check your facts because they are incorrect. Crespo joined Chelsea in 2003 and then went on loan to Milan and Inter, returned to Chelsea and then left again. And I don't know what's your point with this.

My point was that you said Chelsea has done the last couple of years which to me means 2 years, then mentioned Crespo who left more than two years ago

Chelsea had a midfield of Ballack, Lampard and Mikel that day. He was probably playing part of a front three with Drogba and Wright-Phillips.
